It’s possible in the deep blue depths that surround the Socorro Islands, and Jupiter Dive Center has arranged a liveaboard dive trip to Socorro in December 2027!
Socorro Island is the largest of the four volcanic islands located approximately 400 km south of the coast of Mexico. The strong currents around the islands draw a variety of large marine animals. Mantas, numerous species of sharks, and bottlenose dolphins call the waters home throughout the year.
Whale sharks pass through the area during November and December (when you’ll be there), humpback whales visit between January and March, and then bait ball season occurs from May through July.
Acclimated to divers, many of the pelagics found around the Socorro Islands are as curious about divers as divers are about them, which leads to some great photo opportunities. Diving in the Socorro Islands is only available via a live aboard excursion and you can join us on the Nautilus Explorer and explore the waters around these Jurassic Park-like islands!

Why Travel with Jupiter Dive Center?
We’re glad you asked! Before you became a diver, had you ever heard of the Soccoro Islands? What about San Salvador the one in the Bahamas? Chuuk? Jupiter Dive Center knows all about these places. We’ve done the research, visited the resorts, and spoken to the dive operators we’ll be using. In short, we’ve done our homework and made all the arrangements, so all you have to decide is what to pack (and we have suggestions for that, too!).
We always recommend travel insurance, because while we take care of all the arrangements, occasionally life intrudes and you may need to alter your plans. One thing we do require is that all divers have DAN insurance (and really, that’s something you should obtain as soon as you are certified).
Tips for Traveling with Dive Gear
It’s no secret divers have a lot of gear, but knowing what to pack on a dive trip is essential. First off, check the airline’s weight requirements for your baggage including your carry-on. Multi-leg trips may have one requirement for the larger carriers and another for smaller carriers or vessels. Having a luggage scale at home can save you major headaches at the airport.
Decide what’s essential. Some of the gear you are accustomed to diving with may not be necessary or allowed at your destination. This includes gloves and dive knives.
If you are truly limited in your choices, think about what’s easy to rent and what isn’t and if it is even possible to rent gear at your destination.
Some of your gear may already be travel-friendly. Fins used to be notoriously difficult to pack, but Scubapro’s Supernova fin has a two-piece design that makes packing a cinch without sacrificing quality or performance.
