TURTLE TIME!
More than 100,000 threatened and endangered sea turtles nest on Florida beaches every summer. In fact, nearly 90 percent of sea turtle nesting in the U.S. occurs in Florida from March through October of each year. 2020 saw 16,935 sea turtle nests on our 9.5 mile stretch of beach, as documented by the Loggerhead Marinelife Center.
There are seven species of sea turtles in the world, five of which can be found seen in Florida (the Hawksbill, Green, Loggerhead, and Kemp's Ridley) have shells made up of hard scutes, while the aptly-named leatherback turtle has a leathery carapace made up of connective tissue. It is the only marine turtle whose backbone is not attached to the inside of its shell.
Sea turtles range in size from about two to six feet long, depending on the species, and weigh between 100 and 2,000 pounds. The Kemp's Ridley turtle is the smallest, and the Leatherback is the largest. Loggerheads, Hawksbills and Green sea turtles are abundant, and during this time you will them on many of our dive sites but do also keep your eyes peeled for Leatherbacks and the Kemps’ Ridley sea turtles as well
